Santa Monica College's Ballet Folkloricio Flor De Mayo perform Danza Azteca during the 30th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration at SGI Auditorium on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015. The multiethnic, interfaith program included inspirational speakers, music and presentations of scholarships. The event is co-sponsored by the City of Santa Monica, Santa Monica College, Santa Monica College Associates, City TV, RAND Corp., and SGI-USA.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Prayer Breakfast for Unity in the Community  at the First United Methodist Church on Friday, January 16, 2015. The inspirational community gathering, featuring speakers, reflection and prayer was presented by The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Westside Coalition.

PIER TOURS

Santa Monica Pier Docent Nick Steers leads a free historic walking tour on Sunday, January 1, 2015.

The hour-long tours feature fascinating stories about how the Pier has changed over 100 years, the apartments above the Merry Go-Round, hidden nooks and crannies of the Pier, the original Muscle Beach, celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe & Charlie Chaplin and even a certain fishing boat captain who became immortalized as a world-famous cartoon character.

There is no need to book or RSVP unless you are requesting a private group tour. Interested visitors need only to show up at the Pier Shop at the historic Merry Go-Round Building before the tour time and look for the blue-shirted Pier Docents.

BRAIN GAMES

National Geographic Channel is celebrating the new season of its hit series Brain Games by bringing to life an interactive illusions gallery at Santa Monica Place on Saurday, Janyary 3, 2014, where fans can experience mind-bending games and get an up-close look at how things are not always as they appear. The event is to celebrate the new season four premiere of Brain Games on Monday, Jan. 19, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. 

The Brain Games Illusions Gallery merges science and fun as it bends the rules of reality. Participants will have the chance to immerse themselves in four brain-hacking games and learn the “why” behind the “wow.” Follow#BrainGames to unlock the mystery behind each illusion.

The event is free and open to the public today at Santa Monica Place until 7pm.
