Police K9 Patrol the Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Police Officer Hassan, and her four-legged partner K9 Jack, a 3-year-old Labrador, patrols at the Santa Monica Pier on Thursday, February 3, 2022. K9 Jack can detect body-worn explosives and concealed firearms in a mass pedestrian area from around 50 yards away.

Santa Monica Harbor Patrol Officers Replace Buoys

Santa Monica Harbor Patrol Officers replace reef buoys in Santa Monica Bay on Wednesday, February 2, 2022. The Harbor Patrol Officers working on this assignment today are Dan Buchanan, Kit Camp, Phil Loy, Fred Sardisco and David Finley. The Harbor Unit is a civilian unit responsible for public safety on the Santa Monica Pier, surrounding beaches and ocean areas. Seven (7) full-time and six (6) part-time Harbor Officers staff the Pier Substation located on the west end of the Santa Monica Pier, 24 hours a day. ­ Harbor Officers are responsible for responding to a variety of water and pier/beach related calls including boats or swimmers in distress, medical emergencies on commercial vessels, SCUBA diving emergencies and aircraft related incidents. They also maintain the navigation aid buoys that surround the pier breakwater as well as conduct underwater inspections of the pier support pilings. Harbor Officers are equipped with 28' rescue boat that is fitted with a fire monitor, salvage pump, SCUBA equipment, medical equipment as well as radar, RDF (Radio Directional Finder), GPS, depth sounder and marine & lifeguard radio. Regular patrols of the Santa Monica Pier are made on foot or in a 4 X 4 vehicle also equipped to patrol the beach and adjacent pier areas. Officers make high visibility patrols for public access regarding any emergencies or public safety issues and respond to minor and major medical calls on the pier and also beach areas that aren't easily accessible.

Homeless Outreach in Santa Monica

Santa Monica Police Department Homeless Liaison (HLP) Officers meet with the West Coast Care homeless outreach team at Santa Monica Beach on Monday, January 31, 2022.. The Santa Monica Police Department recognizes that members of the homeless community are often in need of special protection and services. SMPD is committed to addressing homeless issues through the utilization of a nationally recognized homeless engagement model. The major components of the Homeless Liaison Program (HLP) model include; Relationship Building, Networking, Outreach, Education and Enforcement. West Coast Care provides homeless with the life-coaching, resources and information they need to breakthrough barriers and to get them off the streets by linking them to family, friends and services in their places of origin. Since 2006, WCC has touched the lives of more than 12,000 homeless.

Vendors Protest at City Hall

Street vendors protest at Santa Monica City Hall on Friday, January 28, 2022. The street vendors were protesting the alleged criminalization of street vendors by the Santa Monica Police Department. They want spaces allocated to sell legally and safely, a stop to the confiscation of street vendors' property, and to stop the alleged racial profiling and harassment by law enforcement. The protest was organized by the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.
