Shelby retired in December 2007 after 37 years of service as a Santa Monica City Jailer. Shelby was born and raised in Santa Monica. He attended John Adams Middle School, Lincoln, Jr. High School and Santa Monica High School, were he played varsity football. Shelby was in the United States Army and served two and a half years in Vietnam.
