Locanda Del Lago Executive Chef Roberto Maggioni demonstrates how to prepare farmers market salad during the Santa Monica Human Relations Council second annual Kids with Cameras, photo exhibition and community conversation at the Santa Monica Family YMCA on October 2, 2010.
Focusing on the human element, sixteen youth from PAL and Boys and Girls Club participated in summer workshops and met with local vendors, gardners, farmers and a chef to learn about how food is planted, harvested, produced and consumed as part of the Farmer’s Market movement. They were led by Fabian Lewkowicz, a professional photo journalist and supervised by City staff members Eula Fritz and PAL officers. Over a period of eight weeks, the kids were trained to document their experiences through the lens of a camera, using a photojournalistic style. At the event the youth exhibited their work and shared their narratives with the community at large. The exhibit was curated by Lewkowicz. The program included a cooking demonstration by Locanda Del Lago Executive Chef Roberto Maggioni and a planting workshop by Master Gardener Susan McCorry, and a gallery walk followed by a video presentation and a youth panel serving as a spring board for breakout sessions based on the summer workshops.
Photo students who participated in the summer photo workshop was Chloe Hassenfratz, Nayla Torres, Yoly Islas, Cesar Rodriguez, Jasmine Cortez, Lilly Reynaldo, Griffin Walker, Arturo Mungia.
