Santa Monica started construction to add a protected bikeway on Ocean Avenue, Tuesday, November 3, 2020. On the west side of Ocean Avenue, between California and Colorado avenues, the project will create a protected two-way bikeway. This will connect the Colorado Esplanade and California Incline bikeways, creating a continuous protected route from the Downtown Santa Monica Metro light rail station to the beach. On the east side of the Ocean Avenue, select on-street parking spaces will be repurposed to expand the sidewalk to allow additional outdoor dining space while also maintaining safe passage for people walking.

Pedestrian, vehicle, transit, and bicycle access will be maintained for the entire corridor. On the west side of the street there will be removal of some on-street parking spaces, but the project will increase the amount of accessible (ADA) parking spaces. On the east side of the street, where requested by businesses and in consultation with Downtown Santa Monica, Inc, some parking spaces will be removed to allow for an expanded sidewalk and increased space for outdoor dining. To reduce the cost of installation and disruption, the project minimizes road traffic striping changes, and primarily only adjusts the west side of the street. Access to all driveways will be maintained.

The construction should last 2 to 3 week
