On September 17, 2023, the vibrant and rich traditions of Ethiopia took center stage at the Virginia Avenue Park as the Ethiopian Cultural Festival marked the Ethiopian New Year with a day filled with festivities.
Hosted by the Ethiopian Community in Santa Monica (ECOMISM), the event was a celebration of Ethiopian culture, featuring a colorful array of activities that delighted attendees of all ages. The festivities included captivating traditional music, a dazzling fashion show, the savory aromas of authentic Ethiopian cuisine, a time-honored coffee ceremony, and a range of engaging activities for children.
As part of the Ethiopian New Year tradition, attendees were greeted with yellow daisies, symbolizing renewal and hope for the year ahead.
Distinguished guests graced the occasion, including Santa Monica Mayor Gleam Davis, Santa Monica Council Members Phil Brock and Caroline Torosis, Santa Monica City Manager David White, Santa Monica Police Chief Ramon Batista, and Santa Monica Fire Chief Wolfgang Knabe. Mayor Gleam Davis took the opportunity to present a city proclamation, emphasizing the city's support for cultural diversity and inclusivity.
