Kites fly high above Santa Monica beach during the second annual Otis Kite Festival on Sunday, April 14, 2013. The event was created as a celebration of all kites for families and communities throughout Los Angeles. Children from Urban Compass, the Junior Blind of America, Children’s Bureau and St Jude Children’s Hospital created and flew their own lightweight kites. Tom Van Sant (MFA ’57), world-renowned artist and creator of this event, flew many of his famous kites. Tom was joined by fellow noted kite artists from the western United States.
Santa Monica Pier Carousel Hippodrome
Historic Santa Monica Pier Carousel Hippodrome on Saturday, April 13, 2013. The Hippodrome was built by Charles Looff in 1916. The Looff Hippodrome carousel building is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It is rather prominently featured in the Paul Newman and Robert Redford movie "The Sting."
