Festival of Chariots


Raj Pardefhi, 27,  hand-pulls  three fully decorated, four-story chariots south on Main Street during the 32th Annual  Festival of Chariots on Sunday, August 3, 2008. The festival celebrates Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the Universe, and is put on by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The Festival of the Chariots is now performed in every country across the world and dates back 5 thousand  years to Jagannatha Puri, India.

Mass transit


The Santa Monica Critical Mass   Bicycle group peddles east along Colorado Blvd. on Friday, August 1, 2008. Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road. The Critical Mass concept started in San Francisco in September 1992 and has spread to cities all over the world.  The ride is held on the 1st Friday of every month.
