SAMOHI Retablos
Santa Monica High School students look at the 'Retablos' (aka lamina) that are on display at Roberts Art Gallery during 'Dia de los Muertos,' or 'Day of the Dead' on Thursday, November 1, 2007. Retablos are small oil paintings on tin, zinc, wood or copper which were used in home altars to venerate the almost infinite number of Catholic saints. The literal translation for 'retablo' is 'behind the altar.' Roberts Gallery is the oldest gallery in Santa Monica dating back to the 1930's.
