Opera at the Beach: Aida
The season opener of LA Opera's Aida is being transmitted live in high-definition video from nine cameras at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Through the generous support of Los Angeles County and Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, LA Opera is able to present this simulcasts free of charge as a special gift to the community. Aida marks the sixth simulcast to the Santa Monica Pier. “These simulcasts make it easier for County residents to get a taste of wonderful opera," said Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who represents the Third District where the Santa Monica Pier is located. "You don’t need to buy tickets, dress up, or go downtown. Just make your way to the Santa Monica Pier, bring a chair, a blanket or a picnic, and settle in with ocean waves at your back and stars overhead, as Aida’s extravagant story of love and loyalty unfolds in front of you.” LA Opera is the 4th largest opera company in the US, and under the direction of Plácido Domingo and James Conlon has become an important force in American Opera. Presenting benchmark productions of standard repertoire as well as new and rarely-staged operas, the Company brings together world-renowned singers, designers, directors and conductors to create opera that attracts the attention of international audiences and critics. #OperaAtTheBeachv#LAOAida

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration
The Coalition of Asian & Pacific Employees of Santa Monica (CAPE SM) celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month at City Hall on Thursday, May 26, 2022. Although the AAPI population has played key roles in the development of our country from its earliest days, the community did not receive a dedicated time of recognition by the government until 1978 when a weeklong celebration was established. It would be another 12 years before the entire month of May was dedicated to the AAPI people. To honor the diverse and valuable contributions from our AAPI community, CAPE SM hosted events throughout the region including musical showcasings, mental and physical health events, and culinary celebrations. Global Motion, Tupua Productions and Prota Taiko performed during the celebration at City Hall.
