AIR AT THE GETTY
A couple walk past Aristide Maillol's (French, 1861-1944) bronze sculpture of a woman entitled "Air" (designed, 1938; cast, 1962) at The Getty Center on Friday, May 21, 2010.
Perched high atop the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the 405 freeway, the Getty Center is a sprawling, stone-and-glass complex dedicated to the display and preservation of the J. Paul Getty Trust's collection.
The museum's permanent collection includes "pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts; and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs." Among the works on display is the painting Irises by Vincent van Gogh.
Besides the Museum, the Center's buildings house the Getty Research Institute, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Foundation, and the administrative offices of the J. Paul Getty Trust, which owns and operates the Center.
