Bus drivers and mechanics from Big Blue Bus, Norwalk Transit, Culver City Bus, Torrance Transit and Gardena competed in the Five Star Bus Roadeo at the BBB Transit Facility in Santa Monica on Saturday, March 23, 2013. The competition allowed contestants to show off their defensive driving skills to co-workers, family and friends and showcased their skills in safe driving and vehicle maintenance. The Operator Competition included events such as judgment stops, turning, and clearing obstacles. The Mechanic Competition requires skills in the identification of defects in engine, transmission, brake, and HVAC modules. The pre-trip inspection for operators and multiplex troubleshooting for mechanics are incorporated as scored events. The Bus Roadeo provides a platform for continuous improvement that would ultimately result in safer service being provided to passengers.
