Over 1,800 Cyclists Conquer 545-Mile Journey to Fight HIV and AIDS
Over 2,000 Cyclists and Volunteer "Roadies" Complete 545-Mile Journey to Fight HIV and AIDS
On Saturday, June 10, more than 2,000 cyclists and volunteer "Roadies" successfully concluded a challenging 545-mile journey from San Francisco to Santa Monica. United by their shared mission to end HIV and AIDS, this extraordinary event, known as AIDS/LifeCycle, raised an impressive $1.7 million to support the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the HIV-related services provided by the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
The week-long ride, which commenced on June 4, showcased a diverse representation of participants, including members from the LGBTQIA+ community, allies, and individuals who are HIV-negative or living with HIV. Notably, over 52% of the cyclists were first-time participants hailing from various parts of the country.
AIDS/LifeCycle originated in 1994 as the California AIDS Ride and has grown to become the largest annual HIV and AIDS fundraiser worldwide. Spanning 545 miles, this fully supported journey serves as a platform to raise awareness about the ongoing epidemic and funds critical services such as HIV testing, screenings for other sexually transmitted infections, HIV care, harm reduction, prevention services including PrEP, and more.
Expressing gratitude for the funds raised, Tyler TerMeer, PhD, CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and a 12-time AIDS/LifeCycle participant, emphasized the life-saving services provided to the community. Despite the epidemic persisting for over 40 years, TerMeer believes that the event brings them closer to a future with zero new HIV infections, comprehensive support for individuals living with HIV, and effective tools and information to prevent HIV transmission among at-risk populations.
During the seven-day ride, over 650 people in the United States contracted HIV, underscoring the ongoing need for action. With over one million individuals currently living with HIV in the U.S., and one in eight unaware of their status, the fight against the epidemic remains paramount. Since its inception, the California AIDS Ride has raised over $300 million and witnessed more than 63,000 bike journeys from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
Joe Hollendoner, CEO of the Los Angeles LGBT Center, acknowledged the significant contributions made by the AIDS/LifeCycle community, including riders, roadies, staff, and donors. Hollendoner emphasized that their hard work and determination provide crucial resources for medical care, social services, and prevention tools like PrEP. He expressed pride in being part of a community that tirelessly fights to end the HIV epidemic.
AIDS/LifeCycle receives sponsorship from notable organizations such as Gilead, FedEx, Amazon, United Airlines, Toyota, PwC, Chevron, and Keck Medicine of USC, which play a vital role in supporting the cause.
AIDS/LifeCycle is not just a race but a life-changing ride through California's scenic countryside. Co-produced by the Los Angeles LGBT Center and San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the event aims to reduce new HIV infections and improve the quality of life for people living with HIV.
