The market will feature the distinctive works of over 250 of the nation’s finest artists and craftspeople, ranging from intricate jewelry, unique glassware and ceramics to hand-painted textiles, custom furniture, mixed-media creations and much more. SIDEWALK CPR

Sidewalk CPR - Images by Fabian Lewkowicz

In honor of National CPR Week, the Santa Monica Firefighters taught free Hands-Only CPR at the Third Street Promenade on Thursday, June 7, 2012. Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths. It involves two easy steps: Call 911 and push hard and fast on the center of the chest. Don't stop until help or an AED arrives.  Anyone can perform Hands-Only CPR and everyone should perform it if they aren't confident in their CPR skills or haven't learned conventional CPR.   Hands-Only CPR is easy to remember and results in delivery of more, uninterrupted chest compressions until more advanced care arrives on the scene.  Bystanders must take action when they see someone suddenly collapse and stop breathing normally. When effective bystander CPR is given immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, it can double or triple a victim's chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR can help save lives. Do not give Hands-Only CPR to infants and children -- all infants and children who have a sudden cardiac arrest need conventional CPR.  Adults who nearly-drown or have cardiac arrest due to a respiratory cause need conventional CPR. SS Viking

Students walk past the 'SS Viking' at Santa Monica High School (SAMOHI) on Wednesday, June 6, 2012. The giant blue and gold ship is 85 ft. long by 30 ft. tall and is made from plywood. The vessel will stage the 22nd Annual 'Grad Nite' celebration on Tuesday, June 14, for the 2012 graduating senior class. The vessel takes three weekends to construct and one weekend to dismantle. Two hounded and fifty volunteers worked on the Grad Night project. The evening will include a DJ, dancing, carnival and casino games, food, a complimentary DVD of the evening, lots of prizes and much more. Santa Monica High School's Grad Nite is one of the city's most elaborate events - an all-night party of thoroughly extravagant proportions thrown each June exclusively for the graduating class by the parents, district teachers, staff, local businesses and community. Grad Nite is drug and alcohol-free graduation party that keeps students safe, sober and alive on what is statistically the most dangerous night of their lives.

Sand Mandala

Check out this Sand Mandala at Santa Monica beach created by Santa Monica Beach Art on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. The group creates sand mandalas on the new and full moon during low tide. Mandala's are a concentric diagram having spiritual and ritual significance. In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of aspirants and adepts, as a spiritual teaching tool, for establishing a sacred space, and as an aid to meditation and trance induction. In common use, mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective.
