Sri Lanka Day

The "Pageant of Lanka" parades through the Third Street Promenade with beautifully dressed Sri Lankan performers and theatre elephants during Sri Lanka Day at Third Street Promenade on Saturday, Aug 06, 2011.

Sri Lanka Day is an annual one-day event presented by Sri Lanka Foundation showcasing Sri Lankan musicians, dancers, food and businesses. Since the first event in 2006, Sri Lanka Day has grown to become the largest event promoting Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan culture in U.S.A. In 2010, Sri Lanka Day attracted more than one hundred thousand visitors.

Nelson Marquez & The Moderators

Nelson Marquez & The Moderators perform at the Santa Monica Pier during the 27th annual Twilight Dance Series on Thursday, August 4, 2011.

Nelson Garcia Marquez appeared on three Grammy award-winning recording projects and has performed at such legendary places as the Hollywood Bowl (Playboy Jazz festival), supporting one of his musical mentors Israel Lopez "Cachao". He has produced for Virgin recording artist Crystal Sierra and has licensed many of his own original compositions to numerous film and television projects. He has performed through out the world, appeared on many television broadcasts including "The Late Show", and "Fiesta Broadway" for the Telemundo network. For many years, Nelson was bandleader of the Venice Beach-based latin/soul/funk band, "Mango Bang" and released their projects on his own label. For years, he also did acting on the side, and achieved credits in many films. However it was his appearance with his Godfather,Andy Garcia, in the film "The Lost City" which allows the hyphenate "musician/actor."

Feeding time

Children watch as the Swell Sharks get fed at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium (SMPA) during Heal the Bay's annual Ocean Appreciation Celebration on Sunday, July 31, 2011. The sharks are fed twice weekly on Tuesdays and Sundays at 3:30PM. This year's annual tribute to the ocean at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium focused on the four habitats of the Santa Monica Bay: the sandy bottom, the kelp forest, the rocky shore and the open ocean.

SPRAY & LEARN

Children spray water onto the Watershed Diorama at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium (SMPA) during its annual Ocean Appreciation Celebration on Sunday, July 31, 2011. The diorama, which was custom made for Heal the Bay by Andrew C. Aguilar, is designed for pollution education and to illustrate storm water runoff. This year's annual tribute to the ocean at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium focused on the four habitats of the Santa Monica Bay: the sandy bottom, the kelp forest, the rocky shore and the open ocean.

National Night Out

National Night Out  involved 37 million people in 15,110  communities from all 50   states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. The goal of the Santa Monica Police Department is to build upon the good relationship our police and community share along with celebrating that partnership which makes the city of Santa Monica such a safe place to live, work, and visit. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
