Dozens of equal rights activists march along the Venice Boardwalk wearing pasties during the Fourth Annual National Go-Topless Day on Sunday, August 21, 2011. Go-Topless Day rally is meant to proclaim women’s constitutional right to go bare-chested in public. Gotopless.org claims constitutional equality between men and women on being topless in public. Currently, women who dare to be topless in public in the US are repeatedly being arrested, fined, humiliated, criminalized.

Pacific Voyagers

A group of Pacific Islanders called the Pacific Voyagers sail in Santa Monica Bay in six vaka moanas, boats based on ancient Polynesian tradition, on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011. The group have traveled from New Zealand to California to spread a message of ocean conservation.

They Started in Aotearoa (New Zealand) in April of 2011 an have sailed to Tahiti, The Marquesas,  throughout Hawaii across the Pacific to San Francisco and down the coast to Santa Monica

Shortboard Revolution

Guests look at vintage surfboards at the California Heritage Museumr during the "ShortBoard Revolution: Surf Design 1967-1984" Exhibition Preview and Reception on Thursday, August 18, 2011. 

Curated by original Z-Boy and celebrated Malibu surfer Nathan Pratt, the exhibition traces the evolution of the surfboard from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. This exhibit showcases the intricate and original work of shapers, designers, artists and riders that created the phenomenon known as "the shortboard". Nearly 70 rare and antique boards by surfing legends and visionaries illustrate the timeline and development of the shortboard. The Heritage Museum will also present a 1980s-style "Shaping Room." The room will contain numerous blank surfboards, which will be worked on by several well known shapers through the course of the exhibition. An additional history gallery will host covers of Surfer Magazine, each image representing one year of the 1967-1984 exhibition.

The Lil Big Ups

Lonnie "Meganut" Marshallt from The Lil Big Ups' Rubberband band jams on his his recycled art instrument, the 'Rubba Box" at the Santa Monica Pier on Thursday, July 28, 2011. The Lil Big Ups is a free youth arts project and musical variety show with educational themes that is designed to provide a platform for creative youth expression in the world! Participants gain experience recording and writing music, performing onstage and in front of the camera, and developing and showcasing their individual talents in dance, music, and art. Incorporating the theme of life cycles and recycling, the Lil Big Ups learn to create their own instruments by decorating items such as shoeboxes, empty containers, etc and playing them with rubberbands. The Lil Big Ups emphasis on creativity and recycling is showcased in their lyrics and music.
