More than 200 cyclists ride down the Santa Monica Pier concluding their Ride 2 Recovery Golden State Challenge on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Ride 2 Recovery Golden State Challenge was a seven-day, 450-mile ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles along the California coast. The event raised funds for cycling programs that aid the rehabilitation and recovery efforts of injured veterans, including R2R indoor Spinning® Recovery Labs and outdoor cycling programs at military and Veterans Affairs locations nationwide. More than 2,000 veterans have benefited from these rehabilitation programs.

The event included diverse arts workshops, demonstrations, performances and exhibits, including a silk screening activity conducted by youth of the Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center, who were commissioned to create three designs that reflect the spirit of the event, and performances by wheelchair dancers Colours in Motion.
Included in the Celebration of Life festival were music, photograph and portrait exhibitions, as well as demonstrations and interactive workshops in dance and movement, painting, calligraphy, laughing-yoga, drumming, mask-making and many other cultural arts activities. One highlight was the Police Activities League’s Youth Photo Exhibit, “Kids with Camera” led by Fabian Lewkowicz and the Portrait Exhibit by artist Kathryn Hall, which reflected the diverse faces and lives of different generations.

Father Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, signs his book, “Tattoos on the Heart,” for retired Santa Monica High School teacher Rosa Marie de la Pena at Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. Father Boyle was ordained as a Jesuit Priest in 1982, moved to Boyle Heights in 1986 to become the pastor of Dolores Mission, and in 1988, he founded what would eventually become Homeboy Industries. Homeboy Industries provides at risk youth and former gang member s wi th job experience, positive communities and a second chance. Father Boyle draws on his 20+ years of stories and experiences in Tattoos on the Heart, telling the stories of LA's gangs with unmatched love and compassion.
