Santa Monica Tree Lighting Ceremony
Santa Claus lights the 24-foot-tall Christmas tree at the Third Street Promenade in Downtown Santa Monica on Friday, November 19, 2021. The Tree Lighting Ceremony featured performances by Samohi Madrigals, Lincoln Middle School Madrigals, Santa Monica Youth Orchestra Mariachi Perla del Oeste, and Santa Monica Youth Orchestra Chamber Ensemble. Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. (DTSM) brings the holidays to the Third Street Promenade with the return of Winterlit, transforming the downtown district into an immersive, festive experience. Tens of thousands of colorful lights, decor and garlands deck the Third Street Promenade, 2nd and 4th Streets, illuminating convenient shopping and cozy outdoor dining experiences.
WALKING THE LABYRINTH
Beachgoers walk the labyrinths at the Annenberg Community Beach House on Saturday, November 13, 2021. The Annenberg Community Beach House has commissioned artist Lars Howlett to create two temporary site-specific walkable labyrinths in the sand and one on hardscape for Out-of-the-Blue, a program of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs. Labyrinths cultivate peace and bring the community together by providing a container for a reflective experience in a focused and sacred space. Walk the labyrinths at the Beach House on November 13 and 14 to experience the potential of labyrinths to create and hold space for stress reduction, healing, reflection, and community building through art.
Veteran's Day Celebration in Santa Monica
The City of Santa Monica, with the Los Angeles Army Recruitment Battalion and the California Army National Guard celebrate Veterans Day at the Santa Monica Pier parking lot on Thursday, November 11, 2021. The program included the posting of the colors, National anthem, remarks from Mayor Sue Himmelrich, Councilmember Gleam Davis, General Curtis Taylor, U.S. Army, and a swearing in ceremony of future soldiers. “It is our great fortune to have so many brave men and women in service to our country. They deserve our recognition all year with special honors paid on Veterans Day,” said Mayor Sue Himmelrich. “We proudly join the U.S. Army in this tribute and ask the community to join us virtually to recognize and honor the veterans in our lives and across Santa Monica.” “The past year and a half have been extremely challenging for our military veterans with the continued pandemic and the fallout from Afghanistan. On this Veterans Day, we challenge you to help us make them feel extra special by showing gratitude and honor for their service,” said Sonki Hong, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army. November 11th is the day the US signed the armistice that ended our first World War. Over 100,000 Americans made the ultimate sacrifice and died in service of their country. Since then, the US has fought in six major wars. Each time, calling on the men and women in our military to brave the battleground and fight for our country. For 21 years, the five pillars of the Veterans Memorial in Palisades Park honor each branch of our military, the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Airforce, and the Coast Guards. The Santa Monica Veterans Memorial symbolizes peace and healing. During the month of November, Santa Monicans are encouraged to visit the memorial. The November 11 celebration will be held on the deck of the historic Santa Monica Pier.
Shopping Cart Tree
Artist Anthony Schmitt and co. install the 27th annual Shopping Cart Tree at the Edgemar on Main Street, Santa Monica, Saturday, November 6, 2021. The iconic shopping cart tree at Edgemar will be over 34 feet tall, covered in clear and blue lights with silver ornaments. This years tree, is possible due to donations from the City of Santa Monica, Main Street Business Improvement Association and the Ocean Park Association. Dia de los Muertos Celebration
Highlights from the Inaugural Dia de los Muertos celebration at the historic Santa Monica Pier Carousel on Sunday, Monday, November 1, 2021. The inaugural Dia de los Muertos celebration is a joint venture with the Pico Youth and Family Center @pyfcsantamonica and the Santa Monica Pier. The event of reflection featured an artistic altar by Artist Silvia Sanchez and the Quintana family that is dedicated to the lives of friends and family who have played an important role in the Santa Monica Pier Community, Cabeza de Vaca Ballet Folklorico dance performance, and an incredible lineup of speakers. The exhibit includes an art installation called "Letters of Life," where members of the community are asked to share their favorite Pier memories and anecdotes of family and friends who have passed. These memories will decorate the space via a digital murals that surround the historic Carousel, and will be displayed over the course of the celebration.
