Chess mates
Two men play chess during a rainy day at Santa Monica Chess Park on Sunday, January 6, 2008. The public chess park is located at Ocean Front Walk (south of the Pier) at Seaside Terrace. It has 14 large tables with (4) chess boards per table, 10 small tables with (1) chess board per table and a human-scale chessboard set into the sidewalk. Although level of play is generally high and the overall tone fairly serious, open tables are free for public use, and observers are always welcome.
Puppetolio!
1) Puppeteer and puppet builder, Steve Meltzer, 54, and his longtime partner Fred, who he built in 1971, perform to a sold-out house during his one-man show "Puppetolio" at the Santa Monica Puppet & Magic Center on Saturday, January 5, 2008. 2) Meltzer performs a skit with Ida. 3) Meltzer has Elmer juggle balls during the show. 4) Meltzer's puppet collection adorn the theatre. 5) Santa Monica Puppet & Magic Center is located at 1014 Broadway in Santa Monica.
