The Santa Monica Fire Department commemorated 9/11 with a solemn remembrance ceremony at Fire Station #1, Sunday, September 11, 2022. Today marks the twenty-first years since the September 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and Shanksville, PA. 2,977 perished that day. Of those killed, 343 were FDNY Firefighters, 60 Police Officers and 8 private EMT/Paramedics totaling 411 emergency personnel. Also included in the civilian deaths were 5 people with connections to Santa Monica. In the past nineteen years, that number has grown significantly from Ground Zero exposures and related diseases contracted from the months of working “The Pile”. ‪#‎WeWillNeverForget ‬

Highlights from Pico Youth & Family Center's (PYFC) 2nd Annual Santa Monica Classic Car Show on the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, September 10, 2022. Performing on stage during the event is House of Vibe. Lowride for a Cause! All proceeds benefits youth services and after-school programming for underserved youth in Santa Monica and Los Angeles County. PYFC is hosting this Classic Car Show to bring unity and awareness to the community that lowriding culture still thrives in the Westside of Los Angeles. "Through this family-friendly event we plan to educate and inspire everyone, especially our youth, to have pride in our culture and to contribute to the continuation of this beautiful art form that we know as low rider culture,” stated Charlie Chacon, creator of West Los the Documentary.  “At a time when underprivileged residents of all backgrounds, especially Latino and African American residents, are being pushed out of Westside communities due to gentrification we feel that unity, awareness and visibility is needed more than ever. This car show is necessary to celebrate our region’s cultural diversity that is at risk of extinction,” stated Oscar de la Torre, Santa Monica City Councilman.

Job summary of a Traffic Control Officer is patrols to enforce parking control laws and ordinances, and issues parking warnings and citations. Perform traffic control duties, including directing traffic, setting up safety barricades and ensuring safe traffic patterns. Assists law enforcement personnel by reporting illegal activities and provides assistance, as needed. Duties of a Traffic Control Officer includes: Directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic by providing manual direction and/or operating automated traffic control signals to restrict traffic flow at specified locations. Patrols city on foot, bicycle or in a three-wheeled vehicle to enforce parking control ordinances and laws. Issues parking warnings and citations; has cars towed and impounded, when needed; and performs required follow-up activities. Receives parking enforcement related calls for service; reports problems and status; and requests information. Appears and testifies in court and at depositions. Provides information and assists the public with a variety of requests and inquiries. Assists in locating lost vehicles and individuals. Reports hazardous, unsafe or irregular conditions, when necessary. Applies boot device to vehicles with confirmed unpaid parking violations. Releases impounded vehicles, when appropriate. Follows applicable safety rules and regulations. Performs other related duties, as assigned. Salaries range from $52,920.00 to $65,340.00 annually.

Santa Monica Police Officers administer breathalyzer test during "Know Your Limit" event at the 100 block of Wilshire on Saturday, September 3, 2022. The “Know Your Limit” program raises awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving and is an interactive way to show how much, or little, it can take to reach the legal limit to operate a vehicle. Officers ask customers how many drinks they have consumed and whether they believe they are still able to drive safely. Officers then invite volunteers to take a breathalyzer test to see if they are able to guess their blood alcohol content (BAC). Customers are provided information on alcohol intake and average BAC levels. Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk. Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety. SMPD reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. It is illegal for anyone 21 or older to drive with a BAC of .08% or higher. According to the California Driver Handbook, it takes two drinks consumed within one hour by a woman between 120-160 pounds and three drinks by a man between 180-220 pounds to be over the legal limit of .08%. One drink is based on 1.5 oz. of liquor (40% alcohol), 12 oz. of beer (4.5% alcohol) or a 5 oz. glass of wine (12% alcohol). The BAC lowers at a rate of .01% for every 40 minutes between drinks. The goal is to help people understand the effects of alcohol so they can make smart decisions about how they get home. It only takes a few drinks to impair, and that’s why it is important that people know their limit. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
