WESTSIDE CHALLENGE

Tennis players rally during Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital's 10th Annual Westside Challenge to Beat Breast Cancer at the UCLA Los Angeles Tennis Center on Saturday, June 5, 2010. Breast cancer strikes one out of every eight women in this country and is the leading cause of death for women ages 32 to 52. “The Westside Challenge to Beat Breast Cancer” is a program of Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital, Santa Monica-UCLA Women’s Imaging Center and the UCLA Department of Radiology. Proceeds from this event supports a program that provides low-cost screenings and diagnostic mammograms to anyone with expressed need.  Since the inception of this event Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital has raised over a half-million dollars, providing 2,300 plus low-cost mammograms as well as giving 15,000 women access to breast health information.

Ships ahoy mate  

Students walk past the 'SS Viking' at Santa Monica High School on Wednesday, June 04, 2010. The giant blue and gold ship is 85 ft. long and 30 ft. tall and made from plywood. The vessel will stage the 20th Annual 'Grad Nite' celebration on Thursday, June 17, for the 2010 graduating senior class.The vessel takes three weekends to construct and one weekend to dismantle. Two hounded and fifty volunteers consisting of parents, district teachers, SAMOHI staff, local businesses and members from the community worked on the graduation  project. The evening will include a DJ, dancing, carnival and casino games, food, a complimentary DVD of the evening, lots of prizes and much more. Grad Nite is drug and alcohol-free graduation party that keeps students safe, sober and alive on what is statistically the most dangerous night of their lives.

GIVING BACK

Retired Santa Monica Fire Chief Jim Hone (center) presents 4 check totaling $24,533.08 on Thursday June 3, 2010, to Santa Monica Police Activities League (PAL)  Santa Monica Bay Area Human Relations Council (HRC),  Red Cross of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Firefighters Local 1109 .
 
Chief Hone served on the Executive Boards of the Santa Monica Bay Area Human Relations Council, Police Activities League (PAL) and Santa MonicaChapter of the American Red Cross and worked with, and was a member of Santa Monica Firefighter’s Local 1109.
 
Over the past 30 years, Jim has served the Santa Monica community as a Firefighter/Paramedic (1980 – 1983), Fire Captain/Paramedic (1983-1988), Hazardous Materials Captain (1988 – 1990), Support Services Division Chief (1990 – 1995) and Fire Marshal (1995 – 2003) before being promoted to Fire Chief where he has served for the past six years.
