High Voltage

Tim Kirkpatrick, 53, takes a demo ride on the electric motorcycle, Zero X during the Third Annual  AltCar Expo at the Santa Monica Civic on Friday, September 26, 2008. The Zero X has a range of 40 miles per two-hour charge. Typical cost per recharge is less than $.01 per mile. The Zero X is no toy. It's a full powered off-road motorcycle with unmatched performance and durability. The motorcycle has all the performance of a traditional gas dirt bike, but without all of the noise, pollution and maintenance hassle. Best of all, the Zero X opens up all kinds of riding opportunities where noise is a problem. (2) Jim Corning, founder of Prometheus Systems, promotes his conceptual electronic motorcycle  during the expo.  The prototype motorcycle has a top speed of 70 miles per hour with a range of 50 miles and is completely charged with the solar panel.(3)  Guest examine the plug in Toyota Prius which gets 100 miles per gallon.

Filling the Boot




(1) Santa Monica Firefighter Matt Norris (left) and Jason Wells, collect donations for children and adults with MDA on the corner of Cloverfield Ave. and I-10 on Friday, September 26, 2008. (2) Santa Monica Firefighter Matt Norris, collects donations for the muscle-wasting disease. (3)  Engineer Jim Enges, 52, volunteers his time after a 24 hour shift. (4) Nick Angel, 27, collects donations on Friday.  The money supports the local MDA clinic and support groups, assists with the purchase of durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, leg braces, and communication devices, and funds the MDA Summer Camps.

American Reflections

Santa Monica College theatre students run through  dress rehearsal of their production, “American Reflections — Broadway in Concert,” at the SMC Main Stage on Thursday, September 25, 2008. The show features songs, dialogue and dances from “Sweet Charity,” “Into the Woods,” “ A Chorus Line,” “Young Frankenstein,” and “Seussical.” The SMC theatre cast will be traveling next month to China for the International Exchange Month and the 50th Anniversary of Shandong University of the Arts. The show opens Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.  Tickets are $20 for General Admission, $18 for non-SMC students and seniors, and $15 for SMC students and staff. Tickets may be purchased by phone at (310) 434-3000 or in person at the SMC Events Office.

The American Dream



Juan Alcala, AKA 'The Dollhouse Dude' dances on the Santa Monica Pier while wearing a dollhouse on his head on Saturday, Aug 30, 2008. Alcala has been promoting his message that its everyone's human right to own a home.  Alcala is a graduate from Cal State and has a Bachelors degree in Bilingual education. He teaches Elementary School.
